Memories

Looking out the window at the tree in my front yard,
I realize how much time has passed.
It seems like only yesterday it was just a sapling,
And now it stretches to the sky.
Where did all those years go?

My memories are slowly fading away.
Then again, some memories are as sharp as ever.
Although I forget what I ate for breakfast yesterday,
The landmark moments in my life are still there,
Along with useless trivia I thought I would have forgotten by now.

I remember
The day I graduated,
The day I married,
The day my first child was born,
The day my husband died.

I remember
The smell of my first corsage,
The taste of the potato chips I had to stop eating,
The sound of my wedding bells,
The feel of my mother's hand in mine.

I remember
The address of the first home I lived in (518 Hurstwood Ct.),
The lyrics to my favorite song when I was a teenager ("Blue Moon"),
The name of my first pet (Kitty),
The first recipe I successfully cooked (chocolate chip cookies).

I remember all of these things, but
There's always a nagging thought in the back of my mind.
What have I already forgotten?
When will I forget the things I still remember?
All I can do is watch that last leaf fall into the snow.
