Sam put on his white robe and got into line with the other guys who had rushed with him for the frat. Tonight was the night they would officially be named members.
"Psst. You've got to put your hood on too," Frank said from behind him.
"Oh, right." Sam yanked up the hood and pulled it over his head. "Thanks for reminding me."
"No prob. It's annoying how they're sticklers for all this tradition and ritual crap."
"Hey, look on the bright side. We only have to go through this once. Next year, we can just sit on the sidelines."
"Yeah. You can bring the booze, and I'll bring. . . more booze." Frank lightly punched Sam's shoulder, and Sam could sense his grin.
"You bet."
The line of young men moved forward and went through the doorway to the other room. Before each one passed through, they were given a candle to hold, already lit. In the dark room, Sam stood in his spot and gazed down at the flickering candle, his hood sliding further down, covering his eyes. Sam smiled a little as he looked at the mesmerizing glow.
